Key events in the divine life of Shri Neem Karoli Baba Maharajji
Born as Lakshman Narayan Sharma in Akbarpur village, Firozabad district, Uttar Pradesh, into a Brahmin family. The exact year remains unclear โ some accounts give 1895, others 1900. Even this mystery around his birth seems fitting for a saint who transcended all worldly definitions.
From early boyhood, showed signs of spiritual precocity โ deep compassion, disinterest in worldly play, natural states of meditation. Was married in childhood (as per the customs of the era) but even as a young boy, the world held little attraction for this soul that belonged to God.
Left home and family at a young age to live as a wandering sadhu. Travelled across Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. During this period spent time in deep tapasya (austerities) and meditation. Known in Gujarat as Chamatkari Baba (the miracle baba).
At the request of his father and on the instruction of his guru, returned home briefly. Married and fathered children. However, the divine pull was irresistible, and after fulfilling his minimum worldly duty, he returned to the life of a sadhu for good. His family later became devoted followers.
The legendary incident at Neem Karoli (Neeb Karori) station in Farrukhabad, UP. Removed from the train without a ticket, the train refused to move until he reboarded. This miracle earned him the name "Neem Karoli Baba." He agreed to build a Hanuman temple in the village as part of a promise made that day.
Continued to wander through North India โ Uttar Pradesh, the Kumaon hills, the plains of the Gangetic belt. Ashrams and temples began to form around him at various places. His grace touched countless lives โ healing the sick, knowing hidden truths, feeding the hungry. Known by many names in many places.
Devotees begin building permanent ashrams at places associated with Maharajji โ including Hanuman Garhi in Nainital and Kakrighat in Uttarakhand. These become centers of worship, service, and community gathering. Maharajji refuses to "own" any of them โ they are God's, managed by devotees.
The most important event in the ashram history โ founding of Kainchi Dham in the Kumaon hills near Bhowali, Nainital. The ashram is named after the scissor-shape (kainchi) formed by two mountain streams. This becomes Maharajji's principal residence and the most visited site of his grace. June 15 becomes the annual Bhandara day.
The first significant Western seekers reach Maharajji. Bhagavan Das (an American wanderer) and then Richard Alpert (Harvard professor, later Ram Dass) arrive. Maharajji demonstrates his omniscience โ knowing Alpert's thoughts, his deceased mother, his LSD experiments โ and utterly transforms him. The bridge between East and West begins.
A growing community of Western devotees gathers at Kainchi Dham and other ashrams. Among them: Krishna Das, Jai Uttal, Daniel Goleman, Larry Brilliant, Mirabai Bush, and dozens of others. Maharajji teaches them through presence, through service, through mischief, through silence. Each one returns to the West transformed.
Ram Dass publishes Be Here Now โ a book born entirely from his experience with Maharajji. The book becomes one of the most influential spiritual texts of the 20th century, selling millions of copies. It brings an entirely new generation of seekers to Maharajji's feet and introduces yogic wisdom to the West in an accessible form.
The great Hanuman temple at Kainchi Dham is formally consecrated. This is one of the most auspicious events in the ashram's history. Thousands gather for the ceremony. Little did they know it would be Maharajji's final act of establishing a sacred site before his mahasamadhi later that year.
At approximately 1:15 AM, Neem Karoli Baba attains Mahasamadhi at Jaipuria Hospital, Vrindavan. He was approximately 73 years old. His body is interred at Vrindavan, where a beautiful samadhi mandir now stands. The date โ September 11 โ would later take on cosmic irony when the world changed on 9/11 in 2001, while Maharajji's love remains as the unchanging answer.
A 19-year-old Steve Jobs visits Kainchi Dham seeking Maharajji's blessings โ not knowing that Maharajji had passed away the previous year. He spends time in the Kumaon hills, meditating and absorbing the spiritual atmosphere. In later years, Jobs credited this India journey as one of the most transformative experiences of his life, directly influencing Apple's design philosophy and his own spiritual worldview.
The Neem Karoli Baba Ashram is established in Taos, New Mexico, USA by Western devotees. It houses a large Hanuman murti and serves as the Western center of Maharajji's grace. Regular satsangs, kirtan, and teachings continue the lineage of love across cultures and continents.
Krishna Das โ one of Maharajji's closest Western devotees โ rises to global fame as a kirtan artist. His albums reach millions; he receives a Grammy nomination. Each of his concerts is an act of devotion to Maharajji, carrying the saint's love to concert halls, yoga studios, and living rooms worldwide.
Mark Zuckerberg visits Kainchi Dham on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a difficult period at Facebook. He later publicly described the visit as deeply moving and spiritually significant โ a reminder of service as the highest purpose of technology. Modi had recommended Maharajji's ashram as the place to find clarity of purpose.
Maharajji's ashrams continue to serve millions. Kainchi Dham draws lakhs of pilgrims annually. His teachings reach new generations through books, films, podcasts, and most importantly โ through the living example of his devotees who embody his core message: love all, serve all, feed all, remember God. The saint may have left his body, but his grace is timeless and ever-present.
